Copyright
RuForge is a tool. The tool itself does not download anything until a
user tells it to. RuForge does not host, mirror, cache, or redistribute
any copyrighted material. Files downloaded through RuForge are stored
on the user's own device and are not transmitted to the project or its
maintainer.
RuForge wraps yt-dlp, an open-source project with substantial
non-infringing uses including journalism, accessibility, personal
archival, creator backup, and offline access on low-bandwidth
connections. The EFF's writeup of the 2020 youtube-dl DMCA reversal
gives the context here:

User responsibility
If you use RuForge to download content, you are responsible for whether
that download is lawful in your jurisdiction and consistent with the
terms of the source site. RuForge does not check whether you have
rights to a given video. That is your call.
Do not use RuForge to:
Download copyrighted material you do not have permission to download.
Circumvent paywalls or DRM protections.
Redistribute or sell content that is not yours.
Mass-scrape platforms in violation of their terms.
Trademarks
YouTube, Vimeo, and other platform names referenced anywhere in
RuForge or in this repository are trademarks of their respective
owners. RuForge is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by
any of them.
The name "RuForge" and the RuForge logo are the property of the
maintainer.
DMCA and takedown requests
RuForge does not host content. If you believe RuForge itself (the
source code, the documentation, or the binaries) infringes your
rights, open an issue or a private security advisory at
https://github.com/UnboundAngel/RuForge/issues with:
A description of the work you claim is infringed.
A description of where the alleged infringing material is in this repository.
Your contact information.
A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized.
A statement under penalty of perjury that the information is accurate and that you are authorized to act on behalf of the rights holder.
Takedown requests for material actually hosted by this project will be
reviewed in good faith. Requests targeting general-purpose downloading
functionality, the kind that triggered the 2020 youtube-dl takedown
that GitHub later reversed, will be evaluated on their merits rather
than processed automatically. The maintainer reserves the right to
contest requests that appear to be using DMCA notice-and-takedown as a
substitute for arguing the tool's legality on its merits.
Third-party components
RuForge bundles or relies on:
yt-dlp (Unlicense). https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp
ffmpeg (LGPL/GPL depending on build). https://ffmpeg.org
Tauri (Apache-2.0 / MIT). https://tauri.app
React, TypeScript, and other open-source libraries. See the package manifests (
package.json,src-tauri/Cargo.toml) for the full list.
These components are governed by their own licenses, included with the
distribution where required.
Export and sanctions
RuForge is open-source software available worldwide via GitHub. The
maintainer does not control where it is downloaded. Users are
responsible for complying with export control and sanctions law in
their jurisdiction.
